The Woodland girls dominated their local rivals, winning all but two events, while the boys barely edged out Cass en route to a Wildcats sweep at the Bartow County championship on Thursday.
As the girls team normally does, Woodland piled up points in the running events. The Wildcats produced the top two finishers in all of the individual races, while also coming in first in the four jumping events.
Bella Carnes and McKenna Trapheagen each won two events. Carnes captured the 200- and 400-meter dashes. Trapheagen outran the competition in the 800- and 1600-meter runs.
Elsewhere, Sydney Molinaro finished first in the 100-meter dash and high jump; Rylee Evans came out on top in the 3200-meter run; and not surprisingly, Woodland’s 4×100 and 4×400 relay teams also won.
Mya Moffitt (100-meter hurdles), Micayla Moffitt (300-meter hurdles), Morgan Cooper (triple jump), Jasmine Hill (long jump) and Brooke Cooper (pole vault) all emerged as event winners for the Wildcats.
Cartersville’s London Shaw kept Woodland from sweeping the girls events. She captured both the discus, breaking her own school record, and shot put to help the Canes finish ahead of third-place Adairsville and fourth-place Cass.
Nakiyah Washington had Adairsville’s best showing, placing second in the shot put. Christine Warner had the top individual finish for Cass, coming in third in the 100-meter hurdles.
On the boys side, John Shropshire placed first in the 800 and 1600. Both races had the same top four with Cartersville’s Bill Archer, Cartersville’s Max Florence and Woodland’s John Forsyth finishing second through fourth, respectively.
In the other races, Cass’ Ethan Carter won the 100; Woodland’s Markal Brown pulled out the 200; the Wildcats’ Jeven Reliford finished first in the 400; and Harrison Banks, of Cartersville, picked up a victory in the 3200.
The Canes’ Daniel Ejieke and the Colonels’ Nigel Whittington traded 1-2 finishes in both of the hurdles events. Ejieke won the 110, while Whittington returned the favor in the 300.
In the field events, Woodland and Cass traded wins before the Wildcats wound up victorious by an 84-81 margin with Cartersville not far behind with 71 points.
Nathan Gant won the discus and Stephen Smith triumphed in the pole vault for Cass, while Woodland’s Nick Bailey captured the shot put crown. The Wildcats took the long jump title, thanks to Titus Jones, but the Colonels were victorious in the high jump (Brandon Martin) and triple jump (Blake Carrington).
Adairsville’s best individual finishes were third-place showings by Savaun Henderson in the 100 and Danarous Johnson in the high jump.
