Woodland tennis sweeps Rome

The Woodland boys tennis team dominated in a 5-0 sweep, while the girls edged out a 3-2 win Tuesday at Rome in Region 7-AAAAA action.

On the boys side, Line 1’s Bryce VanOrder (6-1, 6-1) and Line 2’s Connor Gunnell (6-2, 6-2) each cruised to straight-sets wins in singles action. Line 1 doubles pairing Garrett Wesley and Mason Tucker, likewise, eased to a 6-0, 6-2 victory.

Ian VanOrder and Keagan Gallagher rolled in the first set 6-1 before eking out a 7-5 win in the second set on Line 2 doubles. Adam Pirkle was the only Woodland player forced into a third set, but he still triumphed on Line 3 singles, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.

The girls side offered more intrigue, but the Wildcats still emerged victorious, thanks to strong doubles play. On Line 1, Eryn Gentry and Emma Savage did their best impression of Ian VanOrder and Gallagher, picking up a 6-1, 7-5 win. On Line 2, Monterya Morrow and Abby Spaulding earned a 6-4, 6-3 victory.

Those two points proved vital, as Kayla Gales wound up with Woodland’s lone singles win on Line 2. In what seemed to be the score of the day, Gales bested her foe by a 6-1, 7-5 final.

Becky Wesley (6-4, 6-2) and Abby Cates (6-3, 6-2) each came up short but both were competitive on lines 1 and 3, respectively.

Woodland is scheduled to host Carrollton Thursday in an always key region showdown.
